‘Ode to Phthalo Green’

£400.00

Mixed media on 12x 16” stretched chunky canvas.

I created this painting backwards after hearing about Pantone’s so-called Colour of the Year: Cloud Dancer.

It’s been appropriately called out as tone-deaf and I am living for the alternative descriptions for Cloud Dancer… Landlord special, clan-robe white and Epstein Eggshell.

As many of you know, I am a lover of colour and Cloud Dancer simply does not qualify in my book. Pantone’s response to the backlash was that it represented peace, simplicity and a blank canvas for creativity. BOG OFF! Why are colours always the antipeace, the chaos and the violence? I personally find off-whites immensely stressful. Cheer me up any day with a sunshine yellow. Rock me to sleep with an azure blue. Let me breathe nature with every colour of the rainbow. Let me cool my body on a grass green, gaze up at cyan, find exhilaration with a shocking pink, cleanse my soul with an orange…

So I started this painting with Phthalo Green — the internet’s collective resistance to Cloud Dancer, and one of my forever colours.

This painting fought me for a while. At one point, there was no visible Phthalo Green at all — which completely defeated the purpose of the reel, the audio, and frankly my own protest. But we found our way back.

Now it feels seasonal and the green is loud again.

I’m using my Sennelier oil sticks more, and this one is very much a stick it to Cloud Dancer.
